Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Prior to "Sing It Back" being remixed into an Ibizan pant-swinging classic, Mark Brydon and Roisin Murphy were, of course, best known for being the acceptable face of comedy trip-hop. Therefore, anyone expecting Things To Make And Do to be full of handbag-circling, dancefloor stormers is in for a bit of a shock. You see, Moloko are an experimental pop band and not the disco stalwarts their success implies. Unfortunately, this often involves being as irritating as possible. Take "Indigo" for instance, a song so lyrically unhinged it makes "Lily The Pink" seem profound; or the snappily titled "If You Have A Cross To Bear You Might As Well Use It As A Crutch"--an anarchic showdown between Gilbert & Sullivan and Joy Division that's just plain daft. Murphy's voice still resonates like a loved-up Fenella Fielding--all trembling operetta meets pussy-cat growl, but Brydon's rhythmic quirks and off-kilter sounds are perfunctory, often bordering on the puerile. It's not all bad: "Absent Minded Friends" sounds rich and sentimental, while the languid bossa vibe drifting through "Being Is Believing" is Kate Bush in all but name. Ultimately though, the faults here far outweigh the virtues. --Paul Tierney

4.0 out of 5 stars What more could you want?, 10 May 2002
Moloko's 3rd album is definitely their best yet & perfect to introduce someone to their music. Nearly all the songs are great, with the singles Pure Pleasure Seeker & The Time Is Now standing out. The band have mixed a lot of different styles- Absent Minded Friends sounds like a pop r&b track. Most of the songs are upbeat and dance-ish, with Being Is Bewildering & A Drop In The Ocean as a contrast (They have more of a chillout feel). The reasons I didn't give the album 5 stars was because of 'It's Nothing' which is far too plain and sounds out of place, the rather pointless 'Keep Stepping', and a dodgy David Bowie impression on 'Somebody Somewhere'. Anyway it's a brilliant album, and with the remixed Sing It Back, what more could you want?

4.0 out of 5 stars Wierd and wonderful, 24 May 2002
By A Customer
An eclectic set that ranges from highly original to highly crass. Many snippets will irritate, but at the same time the production is first class and even the crazy lyrics do seem to gel. There is some exceptional material here overall - the thinking person's pop!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good!, 19 Jun 2003
Bought this one for fun the other day and I must say don't listen to any of the reviews that have the word POP in them. This is not pop (thank goodness) and it's not dance (again thank goodness), it is experimental electro/indie cross-over. Enough of that rubbish though...

Strong sometimes funky beats (yes, yes 'Time is Now', 'Bring it Back') with Roisin Murphy's gorgeous voice spilling in and out throughout. Plenty of adequate warped sounds wrap it all up. The first nine tracks are excellent, there are a couple of goodies after that although it tends to meander a bit toward the end. Finishs with a great track but a pity it's not a great mix of said great track. Favourite track is 'Mother', appropriately crazy (almost sounds like Primus! weird).

Anyway, v. cool check it out. If you like this sort of experimental, quasi-electro, rock then check out Spiderbait from Australia and the Headless Chickens from New Zealand similar genre albiet both bands are much, much better.
